GRAND CANYON AND PIPE SPRINGS

Our second stop was in Jacob Lake which is outside the North Rim entrance to the Grand Canyon.  We hosted a Mexican hot dog roast on the evening we arrived. For all those not in the know, a Mexican hot dog is one served on a tortillla instead of a bun and usually accompanied by chili, salsa, onions and anything else on hand.  The north rim is just as spectacular as the south rim but less visited.  Everyone had a good visit and most of us hiked out to Bright Angel Point to get a better view.  It was no more than one mile but at altitudes of 8,000 to 9,000 feet it made the people used to living at sea level huff and puff.

We made a stop on the way to Jacob Lake at Pipe Spring National Monument.  It was a Mormon fort and settlement so that the  Mormon settlers in St. George could be supplied with dairy products and beef.  It was a fresh water source for Native Americans for hundreds of years before the white man settled the area. The restoration is a joint venture between the native americans in the area and the National park service.
