Mesa Verde is an UNESCO Heritage site as well as a national park. While there, we had a bus tour to the sites in the pictures. The area known as Mesa Verde was discovered in the late 1880's by local ranchers.
Mesa Verde means "green table" in Spanish and was inhabited from about 600 a.d. to the late 1200's. They originally built their homes on the mesa and by 1200 began building in the sheltered alcoves of the overhanging cliffs. For reasons unknown, they left the area in the late 1200's. We have always referred to the dwellings as "Anasazi" but that only means "the ancient foreigners". The more appropriate name is "Ancient Pueblo" people.
