Greetings from New Hampshire! We have been very busy checking out the leaves and seeing the sites. On one almost balmy day, we rode to the top of Cannon Mountain in a gondola then did some hiking through the Flume Gorge at Franconia Notch. The group also took the Cog railway to the top of Mount Washington which, at only 6,000 + feet has some of the highest winds and worst weather recorded on earth. The day we went to the top was pleasant at the bottom but, when we reached the summit it changed drastically with the temperature falling to about 5 degrees. It had snowed the day before so I guess we were lucky in that respect AND it was clear.
We also had a tour and an excellent buffet lunch at the Mount Washington Hotel. It was built in the early 1900's by Mr. Joseph Stickney, who made his money in the coal and railroad industries. Most of the furnishing are original and with upgrading of the heating and cooling systems, it is now open all year.
Our last activity was a 5 hour ride on the North Conway Scenic Railway through Crawford Notch. A pleasant day in our dome car to view some of the "color".
